For ideas about places to go for a walk in the woods use our walking search.

Once you've reached a good level of fitness why not pick up the pace? Running will take you on to the next level and most forests and woodlands have a range of paths and trails that are perfect for a slow jog or a more challenging hill run.

Some top tips:

  • start slowly! Run for 20 paces then speedwalk for 20 paces and gradually build up to a non-stop run;
  • warm up properly and make sure you stretch at the end of a run;
  • invest in good running shoes - your feet will thank you for it;
  • carry plenty of water; and
  • run with a friend - it's safer and you can encourage each other.
