Plantain Loch Walk

The highlight of this walk is undoubtedly Plantain Loch which appears somewhat unexpectedly through the trees. Being partway around the route, the loch provides an opportunity to stop and rest awhile and observe the wildlife activity on the loch.

How to get there:

Plantain Loch Walk can be started from Town Wood Car Park in Dalbeattie Forest which is part of Forests of the Solway Coast. Dalbeattie and Colvend are the nearest towns or villages.

Leave Dalbeattie on the A710, heading south towards Colvend. All forest walks start from the 'Town Wood' car park (the first car park on the left). All bike trails start from the 'Richorn Trailhead' (the second car park on the left). The nearest train station is in Dumfries.

OS Grid Reference: NX837601

Mammals: We have information about Red squirrel, Roe deer and Badger

Birds: In winter, look out for different species of gulls and ducks. In summer, Grey Herons nest in some of the loch side trees whilst Little Grebes build their nests amongst the vegetated margins.

Insects and reptiles: Dragonflies and damselflies are a particular speciality at the loch and can be seen flying close to the water's surface. Choose a warm sunny day when insects are most active and look for the Four Spotted Chaser or the iridescent blue body of the Common Blue Damselfly.
