About Kielder

The scale of Kielder Forest is enough to take your breath away! At 250 square miles it is England’s largest forest. But Kielder is not just about trees. At any one time, a quarter of the area of Kielder is open space, including England’s largest area of blanket bog. Kielder is also England’s most important red squirrel reserve, home to the biggest remaining population of red squirrels in the country. A visit to Kielder will uncover many surprises such as the Minotaur Maze and Skyspace. So if it is tranquillity and wild beauty you are after then click on……..

I've been to Kielder a few times, usually leading charity hikes. I love this place! During the last charity event I organised we set off from haltwhistle heading North to Kielder water and didn't see another soul for two days! It was bliss! (and blisters!) If you love the feeling of calm and serenity that comes with walking in a truly natural environment, then you'll love Kielder! So get yourselves there! I'll be heading back for another charity event as soon as I can!

Cycled round the lake with my 9 year old son - neither of us particularly used to routes of this length. Extremely enjoyable (despite the rain) and quite interesting. Pretty well signposted, and safe (mostly off-road. A few steepish up-hill sections to test out the legs/lungs. A good day out.
